Councillor Stephen Chase, a career consultant, was first elected to Saint John Common Council in May, 1998, and was reelected in May 2001 and 2004. His areas of special interest are beautification, environment - including land use, air quality and wastewater treatment; municipal drinking water supply; economic and education development; City centre revitalization; and cultural development. And, he is the founder of Root Cause, the City's tree rescue program.

As a member of the Saint John Common Council, Councillor Chase serves on:

  • Saint John Parking Commission,
  • Uptown Saint John Inc.
  • By-Law Enforcement Advisory Committee
  • Nominating Committee, and
  • Operating Review Steering Committee.

In the past, Councillor Chase has served on other commissions, including Council Representative on the Environment Committee, Saint John Community Arts Board, City of Saint John Finance Committee, Fundy Region Solid Waste Commission, Chair of the Solid Waste Commission's Public Education Committee, Co-Chair of the Saint John Fire Department Labour Management Committee, organized the 2001 Arts Summit that led to the creation of the Saint John Arts Board, and worked on the introduction and set-up of the DARE program in Saint John. Councillor Chase has also served on a number of community groups and associations, including:

  • President – Canadian Red Cross-Saint John Branch (1996-97)
  • Chair – International Year of the Family Celebrations (1995)
  • Member – Board of School Trustees (1992-95)

In 1995, Councillor Chase received a United Nations Global Citizen Award.
