Councillor Ivan Court, now in his third term on Saint John Common Council, was first elected in 1998.  Retired in June 2006 after 33 years of teaching, Councillor Court spent seven years at Lorne Junior High School, 23 years at Saint Malachy's High School and his last three years at Saint John High School.  Councillor Court added a Master of Education degree from UNB in 1993 to his BA and Bachelor of Education, received from St. Thomas University in 1972 and 1973, respectively.

Ivan has worked on a Grade 11 Working Group for Modern History with the Department of Education during his teaching career.   He developed an Outreach Kit entitled "Holocaust Remembrance" for the Jewish Museum.   He field tested and wrote a report on Land Mine Curriculum for the Government of Canada.   Ivan was nominated for the Governor General's Award for Excellence in Teaching Canadian History (1996-1997).   In May of 2001, Ivan received an award in recognition of outstanding contributions to Athletics at Saint Malachy's Memorial High School.   He also received HERE Magazine's Politician of the Year Award for 2005.

In his role with Saint John Common Council, Councillor Court sits on the Saint John Emergency Management Organization, is the  President of the Cities of New Brunswick Association for 2008-09 after having served as 1st Vice-President for 2007-08 and the 2nd Vice-President in 2005-06, Finance Task Force, Saint John Board of Police Commissioners and the Saint John Ability Advisory Committee.  Councillor Court has also served on a number of other committees including the Nominating Committee, Environment Committee, Saint John Industrial Parks, was Co-chair of the Mayor's Challenge Cup for area high schools in 2002, Canadian Committee on Shipbuilding and Policy, and was a member of the Mayor's Committee for new revenue ideas for Saint John.

Health/Wellness: Working with the stakeholders to develop a Saint John-specific plan for health care. Develop programs that promote healthy and active living for Saint John.

Councillor Court, also known as Papa, enjoys spending time with his five-year-old grandson, Tristan.  He has been married to wife, Bliss, for 36 years, has one daughter, Nicole, who is 31 and one son, Jeffrey, who is 23.  Also sadly missed is son Christopher who passed away in 1992.    Ivan is excited about the arrival of a new grandson, Christopher.
