Councillor Bill Farren was first elected to Saint John Common Council in May 2004. Councillor Farren has special interest in retaining and attracting jobs and business for Saint John and holds the Access to Trade Portfolio which enables him to cultivate access to U.S. markets and identify inter-provincial trade opportunities. Alternate to the Transportation Portfolio, which enables Councillor Farren to deal with issues from City Transportation and streets to highway access to and around our City.
Since leaving St. Malachy's High School he has been employed at Moosehead Breweries for the past 32 years. He is the fifth child of Edward A. Sr. and Margaret N. Farren, both deceased. He is married to Geraldine (Gerri) and has three children: Melissa Dawn, William D. (Bill) Jr., and Jessica Margaret who lives at home. Councillor Farren likes to take in the odd salmon fishing trip, plays golf every now and then with friends, and grows a vegtable garden in his back yard.
In his role with Saint John Common Council, Councillor Farren serves on a number of committees including:
- Water and Sewerage Rates Appeals Committee
- Cities of New Brunswick Association
- Fort LaTour Development Authority
- Leisure Arts & Culture Interim Committee
- Recreation Implementation Committee
- Saint John Harbour Bridge Authority
- Saint John Industrial Parks Board
Councillor Farren has been involved with, and held positions, in a number of organizations throughout the City and Province. He has served as:
- Shop Steward and President of the Brewery and Soft Drink Workers, Local 362, representing the workers at Moosehead Breweries for ten years.
- Past President of the Saint John and District Labour Council, a position he held for six years (also serves as the 1st and 2nd Vice President of the Labour Council). The labour Council represents workers from Sussex to St. Stephen and out to Brown Flats.
- Executive member of the New Brunswick Federation of Labour and served on a number of its Provincial committees as well.
- Past member of the New Brunswick Labour Force Development Board for the Provincial Government.
- Has been involved with environmental projects throughout the better part of his life and has been a Board member of the New Brunswick Conservation Council.
- Invited to serve on the Premier of New Brunswick's Round Table on Sustainable Development.
- Executive Secretary, one year, and Vice Chairman, three years, of the Saint John Board of Police Commissioners.
- Past chairman of the steering committee on establishing Community Policing in Saint John.
- On the Board of Directors of the United Way of Greater Saint John since 1987.
- Invited participant of the International Northeast Economic Region Planning Conference in Bangor Maine, prior to his election in the spring of 2004.
- In the year 2000, he was a selected participant in the Governor-General of Canada Study Tour, dealing with "Building Stronger Communities-Developing Tomorrow's Leaders."
- In February 2004 Bill attended The McGill Institute for the Study of Canada Conference on "Challenging Cities in Canada" which covered topics covering infrasture, social inequality and how government and citizens work together to improve cities.
- Involved with many fundraisers resulting in raising awareness as well as money for local Food Banks.
- Sits on the Parish Council of his church, Our Lady of the Assumption on the West Side.
- Member of the Friend's of St. Joseph's Hospital.
- Chair of "Nursing Home Residents Rights" health care region #2.
- Past chair of the Parent Advisory Committee of St. Vincent's High School.
- Current member of the Board of Trustees of the W. Frank Hatheway Trust Endowment Fund. Both the Fund and Bill have been involved with the current restoration project of the Lily Lake Pavillion in Rockwood Park since 1998.
