His Worship, Norm McFarlane, was elected the 64th Mayor of Saint John on May 10, 2004, and sworn into office on Tuesday, May 25.
Born in Apohaqui, New Brunswick, Norm joined Royal Insurance in Saint John in 1953, and he rose to the position of Branch Manager for New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. In 1993, he retired after 40 years of service, and then worked for five years as an Insurance Consultant.
Mayor McFarlane has always made community service a priority. He has been a member of many associations and committees over the years, which included, for example:
- Claims Emergency Response Committee for New Brunswick
- The Saint John Union Club
- Saint John Board of Trade
- Director of the Kidney Association
- Director of the New Brunswick Protestant Orphans' Foundation
- Member of the Environment Committee of Saint John
- Venue Saint John
- President, Lancaster Minor Hockey
- Coach and Manager of Lancaster Little League
- Founding member of Lancaster Minor Basketball
- Vice President of the 1985 Canada Summer Games
An active member of the Portland United Church, Norm has been Clerk of Session for more than 25 years, and he was honored by UNB Saint John with an induction into the International Gold Key Honour Society.
This is not Mayor McFarlane's first political venture. On June 7, 1999, he was elected to the New Brunswick Legislative Assembly as the MLA for Saint John Lancaster, and was sworn in as Minister of Labour on June 21, 1999. And, on March 23, 2000, he was named Minister of Training and Employment Development for New Brunswick. Norm is married to his wife, Cynthia, and they have two children and two granddaughters.
