parking meters

There are approximately 750 metered parking spaces in Saint John. These meters are in place to encourage the turnover of vehicles in areas where there is a demand for convenient short-term parking.

Hours of Operation

Meters are in effect from 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. Meters and Pay and Display Parking Machines are in effect St. Joseph's Hospital area from 7 a.m. - 6 p.m. No parking is permit overnight at the Meters or Pay and Display Parking Machines from 12 Midnight to 7 a.m. any time.

Days of Operation

Monday through Friday. Evening, weekend and holiday parking is free!

Time Limits

Parking meters have time limits of 30 minutes, 1 hour, 2 hour, 5 hour and 10 hour. Time limits are indicated on each meter.

Overtime Parking

Motorists shall not leave a vehicle in a metered space for a continuous period longer than the time period indicated on the parking meter. Vehicles found to be occupying a metered space for longer than the specified time are subject to receiving a parking ticket.

Rates

On-street metered parking rates $1.25 per hour.

Out of Order Meters

Motorists are only allowed to leave their vehicles at meters that are out of order for one hour only.

Missing Meters

Motorists are not allowed to leave their vehicles at metered spaces that are missing the parking meter longer tha four hours. Vehicles found to parking in excess of 4 hours. will be issued a parking ticket.

Handicap Meters

Handicap meters are for the exclusive use of motorists who possess a valid handicap sticker issued by the Department of Motor Vehicle. Handicap meters are indicated by the universal handicap symbol on a sign attached to each meter and a decal is placed near the coin slot.

Bagged Meters

Requests for bagged parking meters may be made to the Saint John Parking Commission office. The cost for bagging parking meters is $10.00 per day per meter. This program is available for commercial use only. That is, if you or your business requires the exclusive use of a parking meter within close proximity of the work location for business purposes, you will be eligible for a bagged meter. Please note, no personal vehicles are permitted in these spaces - commercial vehicles only.

Meters will also be bagged as and when required by the Saint John Police Force for parades and visiting dignitaries, etc. If you require bagged meters for this type of event, please contact the Traffic Sergeant for the Saint John Police Force at 648-3260.

1. What days and hours are the parking meters enforced?
Parking Meters and Pay and Display Parking Machines operate 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., Monday through Friday, excluding holidays. Parking Meters and Pay and Display Parking Machines operate 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.,  in the St.Joseph's Hospital area from Monday through Friday, excluding holidays.

2. How much does it cost to park at a meter?
$1.25 per hour.

3. Is there permit parking allowed at parking meters, and if so, what is the cost?
Yes. You can request a meter or meters to be bagged at a cost of $10.00 per day per meter. However, this only applies to commercial vehicles and does not cover private motor vehicles, i.e. cars.

4. Is there handicap parking at parking meters and what conditions apply?
There are several areas available for handicap parking at parking meters provided your vehicle displays a valid handicap placard and money is placed in the meter.

5. Is there overnight parking allowed at parking meters?
No. Section 16(6) of the City of Saint John Traffic By-law prohibits overnight parking between the hours of midnight to 7:00 a.m. for the purpose of street clearing which includes snow removal and street cleaning.
