snow ban

Is there a snow ban? Call 658-4040

Changes were made to the City of Saint John Traffic By-law in August 2003 by the Saint John Common Council which affect on-street parking in the South/Central Peninsula. This is the entire area south of the Saint John Throughway bounded by Marsh Creek and Courtenay Bay on the eastern side, and the Saint John Harbour on the western side.

TEMPORARY OVERNIGHT SNOW PARKING BAN on all South/Central streets to help with snow plowing after a snow storm.

  • A temporary overnight parking ban may be declared by the Commissioner of Municipal Operations, or designate, effective for ALL streets in the Central Peninsula when, “in his opinion, it is necessary for the safe and efficient removal or movement of snow.”

  • Effective Times: A temporary overnight parking ban will be effective between 11:00 p.m. and 7:00 a.m. Bans may be called one day or two days after a significant snow storm, when full plowing is required. When a declared snow ban is in effect, NO VEHICLES are permitted to be parked on any South/Central street. Vehicles found on-street during a parking ban WILL BE TOWED at the owner’s risk and expense.
Public notification will be provided no later than 4:00 p.m. the day of the ban, and will be done through the following:
  1. Recorded Information Line – (506) 658-4040
  2. News Media/Radio Announcements.
  3. Website - Icon will be displayed when a Ban is called.
  4. E-mail Notification: To register for notifications, e-mail communications@saintjohn.ca. DISCLAIMER: 1) It is the citizen's responsibility to comply with the by-law and to determine whether or not a snow ban has been declared; 2) e-mail notification is being provided by the City as a courtesy. Neither the failure of the City to send out an e-mail notification of a snow ban, nor the citizen's failure to check for an e-mail notification relieve a citizen from his/her obligation with the By-law.
  • The purpose of a temporary overnight parking ban is to allow plow crews to push snow back to the curb on all streets in the South/Central Peninsula to maintain access through all streets – especially narrow ones – by emergency and private vehicles throughout the winter. Keeping the snow pushed back makes it possible to park near the curb and keep streets fully passable.

  • Based on previous winters, we expect approximately twelve snow parking bans in any given winter season. Several options for off-street parking will be made available when a ban is in effect. Lots and the times they will be available are listed below.

  • Saint John Parking Commission parking lots available during SNOW BANS: Peters Street, King Street East, the lot at the corner of Charlotte and Duke Streets, and the parking lot on Carmarthen Street (Between Queen Street and St.Andrews Street)

  • Times of use: Sunday evening through Friday morning: 6 p.m.-7 a.m. the following morning, so that rented spaces are available to Parking Commission customers. Friday evening through Sunday morning: 6 p.m.-12 Noon.

  • Brunswick Square & Market Square Parking Garages: A reduced overnight rate of $4.00 is being offered to South/Central Peninsula residents who wish to use these parking facilities during declared snow bans. This rate is valid only between the hours of 8 p.m. and 8 a.m. If your vehicle is parked in one of these garages before or after the specified hours, you will be charged the regular parking rates.
