Each year the City of Saint John and community partners participate in the National Communities in Bloom competition. Since 1996, when Saint John first entered the Communities in Bloom competition, it has maintained a five bloom rating each year, the highest possible. The region has received special recognition for:
Communities in Bloom is a Canadian organization committed to fostering civic pride, environmental responsibility and beautification through community participation and the challenge of a national competition. The Communities in Bloom competition is a two-stage process where municipalities first compete at the provincial level and, if successful provincially, may choose to advance to the national competition. At each level municipalities are divided into population based groupings and evaluated on the accomplishments of each sector of the community; municipal, corporate, institutional, and individual in the areas of:
In 2003, the City of Saint John was invited to Stratford, Ontario to compete in the National Awards Ceremony at the 9th Annual Symposium on Parks and Grounds. Although the City of Saint John finished second place in the 50,001 – 100,000 category, Saint John received an honourable mention for Heritage Conservation. Quote: "The City of Saint John is doing an excellent job of preserving and presenting its natural and built heritage resources. In fact, Saint John is a National Leader in built heritage preservation. Policies and programs in the downtown heritage area have helped to preserve the historic character of the City. Its investment in qualified staff that has expertise and passion for preserving the City’s built heritage has certainly paid off. Excellent information materials and staff expertise have assisted individuals with renovation plans and shown the value of renovations versus demolition of old buildings. Attention is also being paid to the aboriginal history which exists, as well as the City’s early settlement." |
